STATEMENT: Rep. Heck on President Trump’s Commutation of Roger Stone’s Sentence
OLYMPIA – Congressman Denny Heck (WA-10) released the following statement in response to President Trump’s Friday night commutation of Roger Stone’s prison sentence:
Through his actions and his inactions, President Trump has made his priorities crystal clear.
He has not used the power of the Presidency to formulate a national plan to defeat the coronavirus. Instead, he must be dragged into invoking the Defense Production Act to aid in surmounting our current public health emergency, and he refuses to acknowledge the scope of the challenge we’re facing.
He has not used the power of the Presidency to strive for national unity. Instead, he tweets about the confederate flag and tear-gases protesters who dare to disagree with him.
He has not used the power of the Presidency to protect American troops abroad. Instead, he goes silent when news breaks about Russia putting bounties on U.S. servicemembers' lives.
But President Trump readily wields the power of his office to enrich his political allies, people like Roger Stone who have broken the law to protect the President’s personal interests, who lied under oath multiple times to me and to other members of the House Intelligence Committee.
All of America needs the President's help tonight, and the only person who is getting it is a convicted criminal who doesn't want to serve his richly deserved prison sentence.
Congressman Heck is a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and participated in the House impeachment investigation into President Trump. Heck is also a member of the House Financial Services Committee and the Joint Economic Committee.
