STATEMENT: Rep. Heck on President Trump’s Retaliation Against Lt. Col. Vindman
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congressman Denny Heck (WA-10) released the following statement after Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman – who testified in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump – was dismissed from his position with the National Security Council:
“As I have said before, Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman is an American hero. He is a Purple Heart recipient who returned to combat after his vehicle hit an IED in Iraq in 2004 because, in his words, ‘I suffered light wounds. I was fortunate compared to my counterparts in the same vehicle.’
“Last fall, Colonel Vindman again displayed bravery and a sense of duty in testifying before the House Intelligence Committee.
“The President’s public humiliation of Colonel Vindman today is beyond shameful. And if there was any doubt that this was an act of petulant retaliation, Lt. Col. Yevgeny Vindman, Colonel Alexander Vindman’s twin brother and a National Security Council lawyer, was also dismissed from his position and left the White House alongside his brother. President Trump has shown that he will cruelly retaliate against honorable public servants. All evidence shows that he will continue to do so.
“That spite and vindictiveness is unbefitting the Office of the President. It has no place in our government, and it undermines our nation’s claim to moral clarity – a moral clarity Colonel Vindman relied on when he decided to testify. As he said before our committee, ‘This is America. This is the country I’ve served and defended, that all my brothers have served. And here, right matters.’
“I hope Colonel Vindman’s words will one day ring true again.”
Congressman Heck serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. He participated in the House’s impeachment investigation, including the open hearings in which Lt. Col. Vindman and eleven other witnesses testified.
