STATEMENT: Rep. Heck on John Lewis' Passing
OLYMPIA – Congressman Denny Heck (WA-10) released the following statement following the news of John Lewis' passing Friday night.
"The son of sharecroppers in rural Alabama. The boy from Troy. By these descriptions, an ordinary man. But there was nothing ordinary about John Lewis. When he spoke, he summoned a lion’s voice and spirit. But he didn’t need to speak a single word to command a room. So powerful was his presence. In the U.S. House, we do the work of our democracy. But no other current member of the House has bled and suffered and bled again like John Lewis has done to forge our democracy.
"I’m honored to have served in Congress alongside such a man. Honored to have sat with him in the well of the House floor to protest the inaction around gun violence. Honored to have made the journey to Selma earlier this year and to have walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, literally following the footsteps he and so many other courageous demonstrators laid in 1965.
"I am broken by the news that he passed away tonight. I grieve with his family, his constituents in Atlanta, and an entire nation that he fashioned into a more perfect union than the one he inherited. America’s progress is John Lewis’ legacy."
