Though nominally a transportation bill, this week's long-term highway trust fund extension touches on several issues near and potentially dear to the hearts of the financial services policy world. Though some, perhaps many, items offered as amendments may not find their way into the overarching bill, many could. Here's a look at what to watch for, beginning with Tuesday's 3 p.m.
Four top House Democrats are urging their colleagues to oppose any amendments to a highway bill that would damage efforts to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank.
The Export-Import Bank is one step closer to revival. The House voted overwhelmingly Tuesday afternoon (313-118) to reauthorize the bank's charter, which expired in late June.
Tuesday's vote follows a rarely used procedural move, called a "discharge petition," which freed the legislation from committee.
Even for a group wherein optimism is as much a given as a goal, the news was good on Tuesday at the annual meeting of the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber.
“We’ve been busy at the chamber,” said chamber President and CEO Tom Pierson, addressing several hundred guests over lunch at the Bicentennial Pavilion in downtown Tacoma.
“2015 was a banner year,” he said.
WASHINGTON — An unlikely coalition of conservative and moderate House Republicans and all House Democrats joined forces Tuesday to resuscitate the Export-Import Bank of the United States.
A who’s who of the House of Representatives came forward to debate the reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank on Tuesday. But despite the lopsided 313-118 vote in favor of the bank, the debate seemed most important for members to state their ideological cases for and against it.
WASHINGTON – After a heated debate and a procedural vote, the U.S. House of Representatives moved closer Monday night to the key decision on the Export-Import Bank’s future.
WASHINGTON—When the House votes as soon as Monday on a bill to reopen the U.S. Export-Import Bank, conservatives face the prospect of losing the war after having won a battle to temporarily shutter the agency.
For Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R., Texas), the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, it won’t be the first time.
The stealth operation to save the Export-Import Bank started with a simple conversation on the House floor.
Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (Md.), the second-ranking House Democrat, approached Rep. Stephen Fincher (R-Tenn.) with a proposition: Let’s work together.
