For those income earners in the bottom third, only 19 percent of listings are affordable. That problem could be getting worse: The cheapest one-third of listings are also rapidly growing in price, further limiting lower-income buyers’ ability to purchase a home.

Congress and local governments in Western Washington should give more money to programs that combat youth homelessness, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro said Monday. Castro was part of a panel with Democratic U.S. Rep. Denny Heck of Olympia and others in Fife discussing how best to help young people experiencing homelessness in Pierce, King and Thurston counties.

Five U.S. senators and 16 U.S. House members from the Pacific Northwest sent Secretary of State John Kerry a letter Aug. 11 urging the State Department to begin negotiations with Canada to modernize the Columbia River Treaty. The State Department has stated it intended to start negotiations this year, but despite multiple letters from Congress urging it to do so and receiving regional recommendations almost three years ago, it has not, said Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Wash., part of the bipartisan group that signed the letter.
