Speaking with about as clear a voice as they ever do in Washington, voters last week told their congressional delegation to come up with a constitutional amendment to rein in campaign spending. Initiative 735 has statewide support from nearly 63 percent of the voters, and is passing in all 10 congressional districts with about 65,000 ballots still to count. So what kind of action can voters expect? In the short term, not much. But supporters say they’re building a movement that won’t go away.

President-elect Donald Trump can do better than Stephen Bannon as top strategist and adviser. Naming a man with ties to the “alt-right” or white-nationalist movement to a high position in the White House next year is an insult to Americans after an ugly, divisive election. The appointment doesn’t bring the nation any closer together, as Trump claims to want. In appointing Bannon, Trump has unwitting signaled those on the alternative-right fringe that their white-nationalist aspirations are in some way welcome at the highest echelons of power.

Voters in three states voted to legalize the use of marijuana for recreational purposes on Tuesday, and four more states voted to allow marijuana use for medicinal purposes, the largest mass liberalization of pot laws in the nation’s history. California, Nevada and Massachusetts join four other states — Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Colorado — to legalize marijuana for recreational use. A similar ballot measure in Maine is leading by just 4,000 votes, less than 1 percent of all votes cast, with most precincts reporting, though the Associated Press has not called that contest.

With pot on the ballot in nine states, the big winner in next Tuesday's election could be America's legal cannabis industry. By 2020, legal market sales are expected to surpass $22 billion. And for states struggling with budget shortfalls, that extra revenue would be clearly welcome. Voters in five states — Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada — will decide whether to legalize recreational marijuana for adults.
